A Ford prepara a apresentação do SUV elétrico inspirado no Mustang para o dia 17 de novembro. Enquanto isso, a fabricante foi para o SEMA Show com algo bem peculiar: o Ford Mustang Lithium EV, um protótipo que trocou o motor V8 por uma unidade elétrica e duas coisas muito curiosas: tem mais de 900 cv de potência e o piloto pode controlar esta força com um câmbio manual de 6 marchas.

Para criar o Ford Mustang Lithium, a Ford fez uma parceria com a Webasto. Independente do que você possa achar dos carros elétricos, não dá para negar que esta é uma máquina muito rápida. Onde normalmente estaria o famoso V8 da marca, está um motor elétrico Phi-Power dual-core com dois inversores. Um sistema de bateria de 800V da Webasto fornece a energia e é capaz de entregar 1 megawatt de potência. Isso significa que ele tem o dobro da capacidade da maioria dos carros elétricos que estão à venda e, como tem só um motor, é mais leve e gera menos calor.

Talvez a melhor das notícias para os entusiastas é que a Ford combinou o motor elétrico a uma transmissão manual de 6 marchas. É uma versão modificada do Getrag MT82, alterada para aguentar os 138 kgfm de torque instantâneo. O diferencial Super 8.8 Torsen com eixos da Ford Performance conectam o motor com as rodas traseiras. Ainda traz suspensão e freios do Shelby GT350, para ajudar o esportivo nas curvas, além de um bodykit único.

Os fãs do Mustang podem até começar a se interessar por este carro, mas quem gosta dos elétricos deve estar achando estranho colocar uma transmissão manual. Como os EVs têm torque instantâneo, não faz muito sentido ficar trocando de marchas e, caso seja apenas para ajudar a controlar a aceleração, um câmbio automático faria mais sentido. Mas tem a graça de movimentar a alavanca. 

O projeto serve para adiantar a possibilidade de um Ford Mustang totalmente elétrico no futuro, além de demonstrar a tecnologia da Webasto. Enquanto isso, veremos o primeiro carro totalmente elétrico da Ford daqui a uma semana, quando ela revelará o esperado crossover inspirado no esportivo.
